romney got high boost from the first debate. two things to keep in mind. one, the polls show that the enthusiasm gap that romney has now is in his favor over obam obama. now this means that the democrats' base because they fear romney could be elected is enthusiastic. the swing voter polls in swing state they ask about taking position on this, after the debate, obama 43, romney 20. connects well with ordinary americans. obama 69. romney 7. so i think that rom lom has work to make up for himself but he did a good job. he did give himself another shot at this. the boosts like that, the boosts go away. >> dana: you pretty much the whole block so now we can kick it around the rest of the time. when you look at the number on the enthusiasm that bob mentioned, republicans are well more enthusiastic than democrats. if you are the obama campaign you get the numbers today. what goes through your mind about the $150 million you spent? >> kimberly: somebody better do something fast. this isn't going well for him. bob, you studied this historically for many, many year

if you look at mitt romney, his performance has declined over three debates. he started high and took it south from there. does that kind of momentum or does that kind of performance affect the campaign, karen? >> well, look. i think initially they did a good job of taking advantage of the momentum. but i don't think they'll have enough road, there's only two weeks, to convince voters that he's this newfangled person. they are saying, wait a second. i was on the call. and one of the points these guys made that i thought was very important is we're not talking about the increases in voter registration numbers. republicans are betting on lower turnout from african-american and latino voters and there are eight million more registered latino voters this cycle than four years ago. so that's a silly assumption for them to be making. they are making a lot of false assumptions. you look at where the president is ahead in early voting, he's ahead of his own record. so i think the story is president obama has real momentum in the early vote period. >> and of course, on

obviously romney won the debate. it's not a question of who wins the debate. it's a question of who wins the election and what image they are posting. romney had some very specific objectives here to separate himself from bush 43 to make obama seem outrageous and nasty and bidenesque in a sense. and not to make news and to get focused on the economy. he he did them all. >> okay. >> but, listen, you asked in the run-up to this do i think romney is still going to win. i stand exactly by what i have been saying to you for 8 months on this show. romney is going to win by four to eight points. is he going to get more than 300 electoral votes. and ohio is not going to decide the election. romney is going to carry ohio, but he is also going to carry pennsylvania, he is probably going to carry michigan. he has -- he is probably going to carry wisconsin. he is going to carry i think he will get somewhere between 300 and 350 electoral votes. >> bill: what happens if you are wrong. do we get you to sit out one of those tanks where people throw balls and dunk you? sit acr

when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that

mitt romney debated against ted kennedy back in the '90s. he debated one on one when he ran for governor. he probably turned his campaign around when he ran for governor and won the governorship because of what happened in that debate. and listen to the republicans, don't listen to me because nobody's -- i'm, obviously, partisan. but just this morning on "morning joe," newt gingrich, who debated him many, many times, said that he got clobbered by him, that mitt romney, when he had to down in florida, literally turned things around, everybody saw that and knows that. mitt romney debated -- tim pawlenty said he's as good as a debater as there is, i'm telling you that because i debated him all the time. these are guys that ran against him. the fact is that mitt romney is very good debater. he's done a very good job. he's practiced and practiced and practiced and he's been flying around with, you know, the person playing obama on his airplane every minute. he's gone away and done five debates in 48 hours up in new hampshire or vermont or somewhe
